Adopting

For many people, getting a dog means finding one through networks of friends or buying from breeders or pet stores. Another great source is a local animal shelter or rescue organization. These organizations are dedicated to preserving and protecting the welfare of animals.

Animal shelters have both purebred and mixed-breed dogs and puppies, sure to fit the needs of many potential adopters. (Although most people search for dogs by breed, mixed breeds shouldn't be overlooked.)

In addition to the hands-on help they can offer you, they benefit the whole community by caring for and sheltering homeless animals, placing them in good homes and generally improving the quality of life of pets in their area.

Purina® Puppy Chow® brand puppy food and Purina® Dog Chow® brand dog food is a staunch supporter of animal shelters. Over the past 15 years, Purina® Puppy Chow® brand puppy food and Purina® Dog Chow® brand dog food and Nestlé Purina have donated millions annually to shelters around the country through the Pets for People program. Our contributions have helped in placing hundreds of thousands puppies and dogs in good homes.

You can help, too. First, you can support your local animal shelters with money donations, adoptions or both. You can follow your local shelter's advice in terms of spaying or neutering your pets, participate in any follow-up requested if you do adopt and make sure your dog is properly cared for.
